When they left the inlet you didnt see them again for a few hours. Race was around 175 miles and all offshore! One year I went from Sheepshead bay to Ambrose light in a 14 ft G3 to watch it. Talk about young and dumb

You are absolutly correct. Bill Wishnick also acted as MC, keeping everyone on land informed of what was happening at sea at the inlet tent on the PA system. The Thunderbirds were always a crowd favorite. Hundreds of thousands of people would show up to get a quick glimps as the boats went out the Manasquan Inlet and then would have nothing but the roar of distant engines for hours until the Victor appeared on the horizon with the checkered flag and Rocky Aoki on their deck as they returned.
