Default Question for GlassDave: Crushed Glass Media Blasting

I'm in the middle of tearing out rotten stringers inside a 22 ft boat. There is a very heavy gelcoat build up inside of the boat that I want to get off but is turning out to be difficult with my grinder. I talked to a soda blaster and he said that the soda probably would not do a good job stripping the gelcoat. He recommended crushed glass blasting. Is there any issue with this, i.e. will having crushed glass residue in the boat have a negative effect on my laminations when I build it back up?

i agree blasting wont cut it and will most likely be a pretty big mess to deal with. You need to get industrial quality grinding disks of at least 24 grit. Unfortunatly its the only way. I would use the larger disks though and a grinder in the four to six thousand rpm range.

Trust me . . . if there was an easier way . . . i'd be do'in it

Just a mention you just might want to purchase a tyvek suit because any way you look at it grinding is a drag.
