Default Apache Mooring Cleats

I have always loved the old school cleats found on the early Apache's . I finaly found a set for my Flat Deck( same as the ones on Low Profile for sale in the classifeds). I have a practical question for those that still have them . The spring cleat or the one mounted on the deck ahead of the fairing is a recessed cleat. The question is , do you have to feed the line all the way through the cleat to loop it or is there a Carabiner that you can purchase that would clip on and at the same time not mark up the Gel Coat?
Thanks In advance .
