Default trolling motors

how do electronic trolling motors work? im lookin at the mini-kota type that attaches to your cavitation plate. they come from sizes 55 to 202 pounds of thrust. how do I know how much power i need? do you need to add a separate battery just for the trolling motor or can you run it off the same battery used for the rest of the boat? how long do they usually last? i am lookin at this as not something to be used often, but as a back up in case of engine failure, as it is going on a single engine boat. the boat is an 18ft checkmate and loaded up with fuel and persons, weighs anywhere from 1700-2000 pounds. thanks

Is the purpose of these to get you back to the dock when the Bravos blow up?

Sorry, I couldn't resist!!
