Wink Starting new engine for the first time, Do I need diagnostic computer?

My Volvo Penta 5.8 FSi (ford 351w EFI) is all back together and primed. I've been told that when it is started for the first time it should be connected to a volvo penta diagnostic computer. Is this necessary? I was told that the computer costs around $2000 so purchasing it is out of the question.

Firstly, should I be worried about starting it without the computer and secondly does anyone know of someone in florida with this type of computer.

Thanks
~Dave
