Engine not starting
When I try to start the engine I get a clicking sound. If turn the key several times it will eventually catch and start Thought it was coming from the starter (solinoid). Bench tested the starter and it works everytime. When I re-installed it and had someone turn the key I found the clicking coming from the top of the motor. There is a solinoid looking switch next to the circuit breaker behind the carb. Is that the actual starter solinoid and would that be the problem? I cleaned all the battery and starter connections. The engine is a '96 454 carbed motor.

Re: Engine not starting
I think you found the problem. They use a solenoid to send power to the starter solenoid. I'm not sure why. I saw it in my manuel sometime back. I'm sure someone else here knows why.

Re: Engine not starting
That is the starter assist solenoid, it is needed to have sufficiant current to activate the starters main slolenoid. Without it the wire from the key switch can melt in the harness, swap it for a new one it will cure your problem.
