Default What temp thermostat for a 502?

Fellas,

What is the best temp thermostat for a 502? Auto parts store only has 185 and 195....

Input please!

If it is an MPI it should be 160 F. Going with something else may mess up things.

Mats is correct, if it is MPI the 160 is the one you want.

It is a carb 502... Ok then 160 it will be

Most of us are running 140F marine t-stats in carbed motors, I wouldn't run an automotive one.

Use a 140* for a carbed engine and use a marine Tstat.

Why 140 over 160? I just ordered a 160 marine thermo last night...

140* is what came in all carbed engines. Not sure why. MPI/EFI's use the 160*. The 160* should still work fine in a carbed engine.

160 will work in the carb engine but the 140 is what it calls for so I would think that would be the best bet. I know that if you use a 140 in an efi motor the computer thinks its cold and it will run richer which will burn more fuel. Any Merc dealer should stock both kits with gaskets. Auto parts stores won't have a clue.
