Default Adding a procharger to a 300hour hp500efi ?

Should I be concerned with my engine if I add a procharger to it now when she is 300 hours old? Did the valve springs and lifters at 220 hours. Aside from head gasket change, is there anything else I should do?

Or do I run the boat for another 100 hours and look at a complete rebuild, or engine swap?

Just wanted to get some members thoughts?

If I procharge now (low boost) can I run till 500 hours? Or is that pushing it?

My bet is BOOM.

I wouldn't add a blower to a 300 hr old motor. Rebuild it top to bottom at 400hrs and build it to take a blower from the get go.

I would go through the motors first.....and BTW: I have a set of M-3 intercooled Prochargers on 500EFI's that will be for sale cheap. Available in Oct/Nov. when we pull the motors out this winter.

How did they work for you? Why are you pulling them off? Did you have to have the computers recalibrated? What hp and boost did you run?

They seem like a good system.

Bought the boat 2 days ago. Not sure exactly what I have yet. Install was very professional but the motors were run hot with bad impellers and need to be opened up anyway. Plan on making 540 EFI's. Prochargers seem to run fine but personal preference is to run without them.

What I do know......
M-3 systems with intercoolers
Computers were re-calibrated
fuel delivery system changed as required (don't know what was needed or used)
Install was very custom, even powder coated the piping that carries the air to the intake.

Have you run the boat yet?

Any pictures of the engines and how it was routed?

Ran the boat yesterday, first time out, 98 degrees.
10,500# dry 38 Formula, full fuel, light gear, XR's w/ 34 pitch bravos.
3,200 rpms, 50 GPS
4,200 rpms, 69 GPS
This boat reportedly does 74 max w/ stock 500's and 28 bravos.

Cool Re: Adding a procharger to a 300hour hp500efi ?

Put the blower on and run it. Do all you guys with blowers rebuild at 300hrs? I bet not. Think of it this way, your engine without the blower has less wear than an engine that has had a blower on it all its life. I bet there are plenty of blower motors with 500+ hours on them. Anyone? If it is put on correctly you should fine.

If your lower end is good sahpe it could posibly live fore quite a while, its all in the tune and not getting to boost happy.

I'm with Airpacker on the rebuild. You definitely need the head gaskets (Cometic) and better rod bolts and lifters wouldn't hurt either.

On another point, there are 6 @ 90 degree elbows, one abrupt expansion into the intercooler, one abrupt contraction after the intercooler and one abrupt transition into the throttle body on the Procharger system. All this amounts to big pressure losses, forcing the blower to work harder and hotter to deliver a given amount of boost to the intake.

If you have the headroom this system is much more efficient. It has one vaned elbow into the throttle body after which air velocity (and pressure losses) are greatly reduced through the upper plenum and intercooler.

Sorry, I just get crazy when I see so many elbows.
