Default Oil pressure is 80 -100 psi, Is this OK

Today I did my first oil change after 17 hrs on the break in oil. I went from conventional oil to Mobil 1 20 / 50 V Twin.

My oil pressure at idle went to 80 psi and when I rev the motor it goes to 100 PSI after a few seconds

Befor the oil change it was around 65 psi and would drop to 50 when it got warm and 35 at idle when it got very hot and after 2 or 3 minutes it was back up to 50.

I didnt run the motor long enough for the oil to get hot. I was concerned that the high pressure was not right and I turned around and put her back on the trailer.

The filter that I use is Fram Racing HP 4 . I cut both filters open to see if some thing was wrong or if they were clogged but they were very clean.

Is this OK ??????????????????

Should I use a different oil

From the info I have got on this site is that you shouldn't use synthetic oil until your new engine is fully broken in. And that is around 40 hrs. It has something to do with the rings. Not to scare you, but I guess it could lead to burning excessive oil. Im sure someone on here will explain into detail. My advise would be change your oil back to conventional until fully broken in.

I feel that I run my boat hard. Its rarely under 4200 rpms. Its got to be broken in by now.

I havnt checked my hr meter. It might have more time on it than that but not over 25 hrs.

I think that right now your bearing clearances are still pretty tight and if you have a high volume pump it is just pushing so much oil that even with the relief valve wide open you are still maxing pressure with the fresh oil. I would run it till warm and see where the pressures go. If you continue to see it way up, try switching to a 15-40 or 10-40 and that should bring it back down to a more reasonable level. And i wouldn't make a long hard runs with it at 100 since that is pretty tough on the rear main seal.

My bro-in-law has a newer 454 with a high volume pump that runs at 80psi all day long on conventional 20/50. I would say the 50 psi you were seeing before the change was questionable. Was your break in oil the same weight as the synth you switched to?

Have you checked this pressure with a mechanical gauge?
