Recommend that you use a Thermo Oil Filter unit from Keith Eickert. Especially effective when using a big oil cooler. The thermo unit controls when the cooler gets/or not gets oil. I believe (to answer your question), oil gets cooled before being filtered.

On my Gen4 blocks I run 12 out of the block. (OutsideHoles on
filter pads) to a Canton remote oil tstat to 24 inch x 6 inch diamiter coolers. out of cooler back to filter pad then back to block. My thoughts were that I wanted the filter right before the oil returns to block to catch any debris that may have been in the hoses, cooler or t stats.

I like the idea of the KE filter pad better because of the
pressure loss I am getting via the lenth of all the -12 lines.
I would still put the filter pad after evreything else.

Just my thoughts
Gerry

FWIW Teague goes to the cooler first then the filter.

I highly recommend this approach on any rebuilt motor as there is no foolproof way to clean the coolers.

I thought I read somewhere, that your suspose to filter the oil when its hot, then to the cooler. I could be mistaken.

Most oem coolers cool less than 25* in one pass, Teague's double pass offshore oil cooler cools 50* in one pass.

In other words there is not that much temp difference to be a factor.
