In previous discussions , the general consensus is they're better than the black ones !
Just remember , there is'nt an aftermarket accessories treasureland available for Volvo stuff.

But they sure stand up well !

Looked @ a scarab with that setup. Ran faster than the mercs. Just wasn't sure of them. There is a guy on the scarab section talking about one he had and loved it. I know my bud cries @ what they charge to work on his volvo drives but theyre old and busted and he's a whiner! I kinda don't believe him.

Anyone thats had them swear they are better than Merc's (I had a DP behind 300hp in a runabout). While not all dealers are willing to work on them, most of them never need to be worked on!!!

High End Series with New DPX 500 and DPX 600

Volvo Penta shows further strength with the launch of its two most powerful gasoline units yet, the DPX 500 and the DPX 600. Rated at 475 and 560 propeller shaft horsepower respectively, these two power packs are intended for high-speed boats. With the DPX drive, and its counter rotating twin propellers, and hydraulic steering, the owner gets impressive performance combined with easy handling, safety and reliability. The new engines represent the top of Volvo Penta's "High End Series".

Volvo Penta High End Series includes the DPX 385, 415, 500 and 600. Each unit consists of a big block V8 gasoline engine combined with the DPX drive. The DPX 500 and 600 gasoline engines are for customers who want a performance engine with high driveability, low maintenance and safe boat operation.

The High End Series of gas engines allows Volvo Penta to move up-scale and into the prestige segment and offer a complete range of gasoline engines.

The DPX drive is Volvo Penta's high speed version of the well known Duoprop. It features twin counter rotating steel propellers that give excellent grip in the water with good driveability, response and safety, even at very high speeds. Hydraulic steering is standard and further enhances the ease of driving and safety. Despite its unique performance, the DPX still has the quality, reliability and low service requirements of a standard drive.

High tech engines

All of the High End engines are big block V8s with multiport electronic fuel injection (EFI) for reliability combined with fuel economy and high power output. An audible alarm warns the driver of high temperature or low oil pressure, and if no action is taken the EFI automatically slows the engine down to 2500 rpm.

From the outset, the new DPX 500 and DPX 600 are built for very high output with closed circuit cooling. Many of the parts used are specially designed to withstand the strains imposed, and each unit produced is tested with a minimum one hour dyno break in test. The DPX 600 is completely hand built by specialist technicians.

Technical Data

Propshaft power Displacement

DPX 385 385 hp 7.4 l
DPX 415 415 hp 8.2 l
DPX 500 475 hp 8.2 l
DPX 600 560 hp 8.8 l

Volvo Penta

Volvo Penta is celebrating 40 years of stern drive innovation after introducing the industry's first commercially available stern drive, the Aquamatic, in January 1959. And what better way to celebrate than by taking an aggressive approach to the 1999 model year with the introduction of a new High Horsepower Series consisting of three muscle engines and a tough new stern drive.

Last year Volvo Penta offered two DPX High Performance engines--the DPX 385 and DPX 415, each number being indicative of its propshaft horsepower rating. Both of these models still exist for 1999, but Volvo Penta has dropped their "High Performance" designation and now simply labels them DPX Series. This makes way for the new High Horsepower Series, which consists of a 475-horsepower DPX 500, 505-horsepower DPX 525 and 560-horsepower DPX 600, all of which utilize the new, beefier DPX-HP stern drive.

The High Horsepower Series of engines are built for customers desiring fast, powerful engines that don't require a lot of maintenance. Volvo Penta describes them as "good mannered, friendly, high-tech engines." To provide such a product, Volvo Penta enlisted the aid of Innovation Marine, a Florida-based engine development specialist that also builds engines for the Special Forces. Each of the High Horsepower Series of engines is developed and assembled by Innovation Marine using General Motors' Mark 6 block and heads. The DPX 500 and 525 have a 502 c.i.d., while the DPX 600 has a c.i.d. of 540. The engines are completely hand-built using blueprinted components to ensure that all critical engine dimensions stay within stringent assembly tolerances. Each engine also goes through a rigorous testing cycle with a minimum one-hour dyno break-in period. The break-in improves engine longevity and helps the builder maintain consistent performance specifications in production. Additional safety precautions feature the inclusion of a rev-limiter, knock sensors and an self-acting limp-home-mode that automatically slows the engine to 2500 rpm to avoid overheating. An alarm sounds to notify the operator of an impending problem beforehand.

Each engine is designed with a closed cooling system to increase engine life by reducing corrosion. Another benefit of closed cooling cited by Volvo Penta is that the thermal stability it provides, allows for more precise management of the electronic fuel system. (The DPX 500 and 525 employ throttle-body EFI while the DPX 600 utilizes multiport fuel injection.)

Other standard features found on the High Horsepower engines include a hydraulic roller cam and lifters with forged steel connecting rods and forged aluminum pistons. Helping to reduce internal heat and overall weight (each engine and drive weighs 1,236 lbs), aluminum is used for the intake manifold and water jacketed exhaust manifolds, although stainless steel exhaust manifolds are available for the DPX 525 and 600. Stainless steel intake valves and a coated steel oil pan help fight corrosion, while a heavy-duty oil cooler, high volume oil pump provide the optimum lubrication needed for these fast-spinning (5200 rpm max) power plants. Heavy duty pedestal mounts are standard, but plate style race mounts are available. Volvo Penta is offering a two-year warranty for the DPX 500 and 525, and a one-year warranty on the more potent DPX 600.

To take this high horsepower to the water, Volvo Penta is using a new DPX-HP stern drive. Compared to the conventional DPX drive, the new high horsepower version has a larger drive saver coupler for added protection against drive train damage, as well as larger vertical shaft and pinion splines. For added strength the upper gear unit has been redesigned and four bolts have been added between the intermediate and lower housing. It also sports a modified bullet design for the high speed gearcase to slice through the water in a controlled, efficient manner.

Volvo Penta is touting the DPX-HP as the only stern drive in the world with standard integrated, external hydraulic steering. Another feature includes dual-path exhaust, which reduces back pressure by channeling part of the exhaust through the propeller hub and part through the cavitation plate. For the optimum in smooth shifting and quiet operation, the drive uses a cone clutch with a patented nickel teflon hardened coating. Volvo Penta also uses pattern-matched, shot-peened helical cut gears throughout. For more information on any of Volvo Penta's gasoline and diesel powered stern drives and inboards ranging from 53 to 560 hp, call (757) 436-2800.

My '96 22' Donzi Classic has a Volvo 7.4 gsi/DPX package and I love it. No slip, strong out of the hole, great mid-range, and a 75 mph top end...all with "tracks on rails" handling. I can literally let go of the helm at any speed!

Sorry for the cut & paste posts, but I thought some of you might want the details on the DPX...

I met a guy with 600 hp Innovation engines and DPXs on his 38Formula. They have been trouble free. As a matter of fact he's been on here...goes by "C spray" if I remember correctly( it gets harder as you get older )
Plus they have built in hydraulic steering similar to a #6
I'd take them anyday

Good units.. As Volvo dealers We can still get most of the parts for them.. There are a few things that they dont have anymore. For the most part they were a tough unit & problem free.. I wish they would bring those drives back.. Jamie / Lakeside

Well you cant argue with all that. Maybe we should put one on the race boat when the #3 finally gives up the gost, Looks like that Scarab might be the way to go. He says his mates tell him the boat feels like it has tyres, not propellers. Its that responsive.
