Default Ramcom FloMax 300 vs 300M fuel filter

Lots of questions about the FloMax fuel filter.

1.) Can either the 300 or 300M screw on filter cartridge be used as a direct replacement for the Merc water seperating fuel filter on the 496HO cool fuel system (2005)?

2.) The 300 looks about the same size as the stock Merc WSFF and the 300M ("marine") looks huge and at double the price. Is the 300 plenty large for a ~100 engine hour season change interval. (Please, no bigger is always better comments.) I am looking for actual user experience comments.

3.) Any usable place to mount this fuel filter system on the 496HO engine itself as replacement for the inline fuel filter? If yes, details please!
