Default Shavings in oil pan

Engine 1988 SBC FWC 500 hrs. inboard. Shavings of what looks like baring material in oil pan Yea lots of it.
Rod bearings show some slight wear, mains look very good almost like new. Engine knocks. Where else to look ?

How far have you taken it apart ? How does the thrust bearing look ? Aluminum piston material looks very much the same as bearing material. Seems like you need to dig deeper to find where it is coming from.

with all due respect, why are you even asking. you KNOW it has to come apart to the last piece... just do that and the answer will be self evident. any other approach is just flat asking to have a disaster.
