Make sure ALL the bolts are out. I did an 89 Evinrude 225 last winter that would not seperate. I had a lifting ring in the crankshaft and jacked it up a half inch off the floor with a car engine hoist. Whacked the mid with a rubber mallet a few times and it broke loose.

there are also 2 more nuts under the the cowling in the very front , just over the pivot pin behind the tilt tube. you will have to loosen them and lift the power head up a little then finish loosening them as there is very little clearance between them and the pivot pin or center section housing.
i believe there are 10 in total.
there are also 2 in the bak under the area behind the coil packs.
good luck.

Yep 10 bolts, also the gaskets will stick a lot more than you think. After you reinstall with new gaskets, re-tighten all 10 bolts after the first couple runs and/or a week or two as the gasket will take a set.
