540 Cam Question
I am building a new motor for my boat.
540 - 9.75 compression
Edelbrock Victor JR heads - CNC ported 325 cc intakes
Dana Marine Flo-torque exhaust - long vortec risers + 1" O2 sensor plate.
Thinking about using the 741 cam.
Question:
Should I get the cam on the normal Crane 112 deg lobe centerline or have it ground on 114 like Merc did?
Why?
What difference will it make to horsepower and idle quality?
Thanks
Chris

After spending your hard earned cash on a set of cnc'd heads and upgrading to 540 cubic inches do your self a favor and spend a extra 50-75$ on a custom ground hyd roller vs the 20 year old design of the coveted 741 cam, your peak hp might be similar BUT the usable tq and hp curves will be substantially better, which is what really matters, along with idle quality and driveability. The guy to call is Bob mader aka RM builder on this site- 585-654-8583,he is out testing a race boat for the next few days but do yourself a big favor and contact him,he will custom spec you a cam at a decent price, that is matched exactly to the overall components of your motor. He has done this for countless oso members including myself,Smitty
