Default T-stat housing with bypass.

I'm running crossovers. Who makes a good thermostat housing with a water bypass outlet before the t-stat, so that my exhaust gets water when the engine's cold? Or is drilling holes in the t-stat the only way to go?

Anyone running one of these? http://www.trickmarine.net/productde...id=613&incat=6
How's it working out for you? From the looks of it, it would seem that the bypass on this particular stainless marine housing would put cold water on top of the t-stat? Would this affect how and when the t-stat opens?

Thanks!

I have a procharger supplied t-stat housing that had ports to get around the t-stat. I plumbed these through my domestic hot water heater and placed a valve as these were 5/8" hose barbs (too much by-pass to allow heat to build up in the block). I have adjusted the valve 1/2 way so call it a 5/16's by-pass. Works great!

Nick, that looks like what was suggested to Mike (offthefront). I linked to page 2, check around post #30 and on...

Baron, so you have an in-line adjustable valve installed between your crossover bypass outlet and the t-stat housing bypass inlet to control the bypass feed? Good idea.

Handfulz, thanks man, great thread! I wish I found that sooner.

Okay, I think I've got this figured out. I just read a bunch on the subject.

Would this be a proper set-up?

I probably haven't read as much as you but from what little I have read, I "think" I'd want the psi relief to do it's job on the block. Maybe it wouldn't make a difference, but I'd think the sea pump would deliver more than psi relief, and you might want that extra capacity to feed the exhaust.
Also, before I did the psi relief (they aren't cheap), if you rig it so that the crossover bypass feeds the tstat housing/exhaust manifolds, I wonder if that would somehow "self-regulate"?

Thanks, rv!

handfulz, from my understanding (thanks to about 20 OSO threads on the subject ) I believe it's best to release pressure before the block - that way you avoid potentially over-pressurizing the block at high RPMs and you eliminate the possibility of blowing head gaskets, etc.

And yes, I already have the relief valves, No they weren't cheap.

The way my set up works is that it does not take water from the crossover as I want all of the cold water to go through the block. I take the water from just below the T-stat which allows all the cold water to circulate through the block thus providing max cooling and heats up the thermostat, thus the engine. If you take cold water from the crossover and return on top of the thermostat you can cool the thermostat from the non block side lessoning the flow through the block from the crossover circ pump ports.
