Default 7.4 MPI and 502 Mag

What do yo think? I have a line on a 502Mag EFI setup from the heads up. I am removing my procharged 7.4 mpi this winter to change out the cast internals. I am thinking I can punch it up to 502 (or better) since it will be getting worked anyway. I am confident the procharger will fit right back on with the swap of the hose from the intercooler to the intake. I am under the impression they are both gen v/vi engines and all peices will bolt together.

My question is this: Can anybody tell me If the 502 set up will not work on this engine? I beleive it to be a better system and to have larger injectors, is this correct?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't think you can "punch it up" to a 502 as I don't think the 7.4 block can be bored enough to get there. As far as bolting on a 502 MPI set up, as long as they are both from the same generation block & heads, it shouldn't be a problem. Most likely, even if they are from different gen blocks & heads, the intake should still bolt on. You will have to have the computer re-programmed, so it will be best to tune it on a dyno.

I will be replacing the crank, rods and pistons as part of the rebuild, and the heads will come with the intake. I think beween stroke and bore I could acheive 502. Im just not sure if the Gen vi block from the 7.4 is compatible with the 502 heads and intake (gen v I think)?

I am concerned the 7.4 mpi system will not sufficiently support the procharger system even with a re-program, thats why I want the 502efi setup....what do you think?

You can't make a 7.4 into a 502.
A 454 and 502 are two different engine blocks. Most you can do is to stroke and bore the 454 to make it a 496. Chances are you have 2 bolt mains, so you're throwing good money after bad anyway.

Right you are, this is not a siamese bore block, but it is a four bolt main so 496 might work out. I looks like the 502 parts deal might not work out now anyway, cost me three times the purchase price to ship them from out of state.

I am not looking for all out performance, but I still want to run the procharger with sufficient fuel and forged internals, what do you think is the best route from here?
