This works pretty well
This setup worked pretty well for changing the upside down oil filters without making a mess. I would usually punch a hole in the filter and then wait for it to drain, then surround the filter base with paper towels before removal. Thought I would try something different.
I put the following rig together by cutting out the bottom of a plastic "damp gone" tub and then used a hose clamp to hold and seal it to the OD of the filter base. Unscrew the filter, immediately take it out and turn it over - you will loose oil which will be caught in the plastic tub. Wick up the extra oil with paper towels, and install the new filter. Worked well for me, fast with no mess.

4 bucks worth of brass fittings, a drill, a 1/4" NPT tap and 20 minutes. Never a problem or mess again.
Pull the filter adapter off. Drill and tap a hole on the side facing out. Screw in a brass male to female fitting and thread a brass plug into that.
Next oil change, put a bucket under the new filter drain, remove the plug, punch a hole in the top of the filter and let it drain.
Now you can pull the filter with no mess whatsoever every time.
