The Mark IV 396/402, and 427 engines were internally balanced (3.76" stroke). Maybe the truck 366 BBC as well, but the 4" stroke BBC were all externally balanced (454, 502, 496).

I can understand your concerns and possible confusion. Keep in mind though any BBC can be internally balanced as well. There are several rotating assms. available that are internally balanced. Internally balanced BBC's will require a neutrally balanced harmonic balancer and flywheel/flexplate. From GM yes they are externally balanced.
Hope this makes sense.. It's getting late.

Correct. I didn't mean to confuse the matter however just wanted to make sure flamingo was aware of other possibilities and combos. Perhaps if he had an engine that may be internally balanced by chance and he is looking for a balancer and or flexplate/flywheel that be certain of what internals are. A simple inspection is well worth the time. On the other hand he may know exactly what he has.

I had this happen once with a 502 that was a spare engine that I bought from a guy who new nothing about it and I bolted with the ext. balanced accs. to get me through a season and I had to pull everything back apart, R & R. It wasn't a real fun time considering I only had about 3 weeks of boating left.

It was stupid on my behalf however was in a rush.

I was looking at balancers and flywheels, there where listings for internally balanced BB, I didnt think that someone may have a internally balanced rotating assy.
