Gernation V Cam verse Gernation VI Cam
I have a generation V cam for a 420 HP engine and I wanted to know if it could be used in a generation VI engine?

GenV block is a set up for a flat tappet cam, Gen VI is set up for a roller. The snout on the cam is different and also the timing chain is different. Why would you want to use a flat tappet cam when you could go roller?

The cam could still be a hyd. roller. It would be the same cam as a Mk IV.
Ohio,
Just be sure that you set the end play of the cam. With a Gen VI, you don't have to because the cam has a step nose that uses a retainer plate to keep the cam from walking. You will need to use a cam button to control how much the cam can walk forward. Ideally, you want .006-.010". Good luck.

The Gen V block has the provision for the retainer plate, but it did not use it from the factory since it didn't have a step nose cam. However, you can install a Gen Vi cam in it and use the retainer plate. You can also do that in a MK IV, Dart, and Merlin blocks. They all have the bolt holes at the front of the block. You just need the step nose cam.

I'm sorry. They put them in the 500's because they used different cams and retrofit lifters. I think the 500's were the only Gen V to get that. All of the Gen VI's had a step nose cam since they were factory hyd. roller engines.
Sorry for the mistake.

Years ago, when the 502 V first came out, I ordered a short block from the GM dealer... It came with a cam in it, and was not suppose to per GM. Found out later it was one of 12 released that day and they were not available for a short period after that for a few weeks or months. I was trying to find a flywheel for it and found out the info the short blocks from that day..
Anyway, it had the straight cam without the step.. Back in the day, I believe there was a lot of mix and match and confusion as to what was what.
The next year the VI came out..
