Default need 496 experts again fuel prob?

Just put in yesterday, had a high speed miss. Idled ok, started many times ok. Figured booster pump clogged again. Think I left low on fuel. Booster pump almost clean. Dumped water separation filter for kicks. BTW put 35 gals. fresh fuel in some 89. Now it barely runs, idles rough about 550 rpms and wants to die. Started several times, stalled a few. Tried to bump the throttle, didn't help. No alarms. Any ideas? Thanks JC

I've done alot of reading and have some things to check.
Could bad gas do this? Does water filter still hold anything when dumped out? Could be electrical? Have about 625 hours.
Thanks, trying to eliminate while its in the water. Where is other fuel pump?

I've never had this problem with the 496s (have had plenty of others), but my buddy in the marina has. Dropped in and motors ran fine, filled up at the marina pump and within 2-3 minutes the motors where missing, sputtering and struggling to run. I watched him spend countless hours that season with a compressed air tank and numerous replacement filters chasing crap from his fuel system.

The scary thing is. a 496 starved for fuel will eat the upper ring land on the piston, this I have first hand experience with.

Have you scanned the motor yet? That would be my first step.

Where is the booster pump? And how do you check to see if it is clean?

My 496 is running pretty good and not throwing any codes. But every now and then it starts hard?

No scan, trying to check some simple stuff before I pull it back out and pay and pay and......
Booster pump behind water sep filter. May be different on newer models. Notorious for being clogged.

Btw, I put the fuel in before I dropped in not right before it started rough idle. You take the booster pump off and apart, there is a screen that may be covered with gunk. Usually a high speed miss not a hard start. Enough fuel gets through at low speed.

Thanks!

Your rough idle could be your IAC.

Changed that a few years ago. Ran perfect but had an alarm.
