Default Merc 500HP "Blue Motor" Cam & Heads

Okay
I have a 1998 Eliminator XP Eagle with the 502 HP 500 Carb'd "Blue Motor" and I am getting ready to change the head springs as recommended through my research on this site.

Digging deeper into the cam specs here at OSO I have run into a conflict of information that I need to clear up and then talk about some mild head work.

My research shows that the correct cam specs for this model motor is the Crane #169611 - However SB posted on here in 2006 a statement that has me a bit confused. quote as follows;
"The HP500 (blue carb'd motor )used the HR '721' grind from Crane. Gen V and Gen VI motors. Just different cam cores."

The only match in the 721 grind is the Crane # 168721... So which one is correct??? the #169611 or the #168721

The other side of my seeking advice is that I have decided to go ahead and recondition the heads and have some mild porting and bowl work done. I was planning on sticking with the stock cam and carb and just clean up the heads.

I have read that some recommend having the exhaust relieved as well because the intake is so much larger. Is this a good idea??

Any advice on anything else I should consider??

Oh, and any recommendations for head springs, obviously looking for more durability but do not want to break the budget.

Thanks in advance... John
