Default Painting my Imco Extension Boxes.....

Just curious if anyone can point me in the right direction...... about 50% of the paint/powdercoating on my extension boxes is peeled off........it looks like sh*t.....! I want to repaint them this year or over the winter...... has anyone done this on the boat or am I just wasting my time.......I do not want to pull the engines just to do paint work, but I don't want to waste my time sanding and painting and have it just pit and peel again next season...........

You can paint anything on the boat that you want to.
If the boat sits in the water for long periods of time, then the advice is different than if it is in for the weekend and back on the trailer.

DuPont Centari over Mercruiser primer is hard to beat. Scrape off whatever Imco paint is loose, feather the edges with a scotchbrite wheel on an angle grinder, use a marine aluminum primer in light passes to get the build depth you need for smoothing it out, once it's smooth with a sanding block, one more medium coat of primer followed by the block again. Remove masking and make sure you have all exposed metal primed. Use small brush to cover any missed areas. Wipe with solvent, retape, rewipe, and spray Centari medium wet 2 coats followed by a final crisscross wet coat with no runs.

If the boat is to sit in the water for long periods, then you want a 2 part marine-specific paint.
