Gulf Coast of Florida Insurance
Hello,
Just purchased a 2003 Velocity 320 powerboat with twin 502's and Bravo 1 drives. 44 year old driver/owner no tickets, good credit score, no boat claims in last 10 years.
Would like to insure the boat and the 2008 Myco 35' triple axle trailer. Boat will be dry rack stored in Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. Who's writing policies? I've gotten one quote from Progressive but would like a few more to compare- who is writing policies for the Gulf Coast? One company told me they had a moratorium on Gulf boat policies becuase of the BP oil spill- There is no spill activity within hundreds of miles of Tampa Bay so what's the deal?
Thanks,
Rich

Even though the oil is not close to you, insurance companies will always be cautious rather than push the envelope. When you get an insurance policy in FL, your policy allows you full Gulf navigation and does not just restrict you to a particular section of the Gulf...
Anyways, I'd purchase that Progressive quote while you still can.

My honest advice would be to just take the Progressive quote while you are able to. Progressive could "shut down" tomorrow and then that quote is null and void. You really don't have time to shop it around. If you purchase the Progressive quote, then you can shop it at renewal after the mess is cleaned up or moratoriums are lifted.

While I'd agree that waiting too long can be problematic, in todays world, with Google at your fingertips, jumping on insurance quotes just for the sake of it, unless we're talking homeonwers and a storm is imminent, but not yet close enough to stop the companies from writing, is not a recommended course of action.
I'd start with Google/Yahoo.
I'd make some calls and fill out a few on line forms. Most will get back to you immediately. Within a few hours is not unusual.
I'd try to locate an agent within my area.
A few hours of on line shopping can net you a big savings.

I don't know if I'd agree with this but due to the age of this post, it's probably a moot issue.

Yeah, this is a bit out of date. The Gulf is back open for business for insurance now. The carriers that I would recommended for Gulf state performance boat insurance are:
American Modern
Lloyds
Markel
American Reliable
State National
I do not recommend Google and Yahoo for trying to find performance boat insurance. You'll waste your time and get very frustrated. GO BY REFERRAL.
There are only a few agents that specialize in performance boat insurance.
