Default 88 242LS power down question?

Here is a question for you because I am stumped.....

I was out on the sound in a 2 foot chop running about 4,000RPM at about 40mph and out of no where the motor slowly and smoothly rolls back on the throttle and shuts down. This happens without me touching the throttle. I then turn the key and the engine turn right on like nothing happened and we run all day without a hitch after that. Temp was right on, oil pressure perfect and a full tank of gas.

This has happened twice now after about 30 minutes of running hard.

Any thoughts oh how to problem solve?

Motor is fully rebuit 454 carb with minimal hours and has been serviced properly.

Thanks for all the help.

Jed

pick ups on back of dist. if they are old post style, they may be bad. mine did it twice fired like nothing was wrong then the third time never restarted.

Fire the boat and tap the posts and see if it dies.

The distributor is a 2 year old MSD unit.

on the older mercruiser dist, with thunderbolt ignition there is a white red and white green wire that attach to the back of the dist. they controll your advance. they are connected to two brass posts that stick out of the back of the advance modual. this may not be the case with a new msd.

It sounds electrical. Check all your ignition grounds, and check the purple wire make sure its not arcing any where. your kill switch /keyswitch could be bad/ loose connection. and just check the coil. spray it with water when its hot see what happens.
start the motor and wiggle your harness plug see if it dies. could be a bad connection or wire in the plug also very common.

Also post this in the do it yourself section.

Mine did that and turned out to be the harness, also the fuel filter will stop fuel from flowing through it when satuated with water.
