Red face stuck in gear

Hi need some help I have twin 496HO in 28 foot pantera and starboard motor is stuck in forward gear . i have disconected shift cable on top of the motor the one that comes from the marine /machine controls and you can then move the lever so the problem is in the leg .no experience with bravo one at all .it is a 2001 and it hapend as i was putting boat on tailer so slow speed . i can see where cable enters the drive how big a job is it to get inside be glad of any help regards paul

pull the top cap off and the rear cap. Drive really need to come off and the upper looked at. The cone clutch is stuck. Most likely rebuild time for the upper.

I just had this problem end of last year. I thought the cable going to the outdrive broke. When I removed the back cap the screw had worked out that operated the rod to the cone clutches. I checked and screw was still all right and threads in rod were still good and not stripped. I install locktite on screw and put back in. Changed fluid and back on the water.

thanks guys , the oil in outdrive is like new and i did take it to the maxjust befor i came in i may have been too aggresive back and forward with the shift as i was puting boat on the trailer could this have done it ,i wil take top and back plate off 2morow need to learn this stuff myself not maney bravo one experts here in England thanks again regards paul

The linkage and detent ball behind the back cover on the drive is probably corroded.

I had the the small pin at the top break while coming in one day...no shift after that..trickey as I was coming right up to the dock..

Red face still stuck

took the 2covers off ball and spring perfect still has greas on it everthing looks good and clean prop will not turn by hand either way but if i fire the motor prop spins i will have a go a taking drive of is it just the six nuts i can see and rams or is there a lot more going on in there that i cant see ???? regards paul from england

Remove the speedometer hose if equipped (raise drive, it's on the front of the lower unit. Twist, then lift out).

Then just the rams and six nuts.
