400ss suggestions? good or bad combos, advice?

Really looking into the 2001-2004 400ss right now. Since I sold my boat I am cashed up and ready to move up.

I have found quite a few that I like, and that I think can be bought REAL cheap due to the current financial market.

My main question is, are the 502s really that bad of an engine? I like going fast, but I want TURN KEY reliability. I have heard the 502 and up will cause hard wear and tear on the out drives.

Can anyone think of anything else to look at or be concerned with aside from the obvious? I would love to have bow thrusters, but it appears that most of the 2002s that I have found don't have that.

Maybe it just wasn't an option then.

Anyways, I really appreciate any and all advice.. whether it be personal choices or not. I just don't want to make any mistakes.

I had a 2001 280BR with 450 hours, and it was bar-none the nicest looking 01 I have ever seen.... so the bar is set pretty high for me. I had the volvo out drives as well, and aside from winterization, impeller, and oil changes, never had one single issue with the boat.

Thanks everyone!

Swing for a boat with Volvo D6/DP-H diesel stern drives if you can. It will probably actually be cheaper in the long run, and you'll like how the boat runs versus gas.

The older 502's are great motors...just keep n eye on oil. They burn a little oil from day one but if taken care of will run forever.....and quite honestly that's the smallest engine package made for that boat. The 496's are 10 hp more, with 500's or 525's being next (and most desireable IMO). I did a poker run last summer and a guy had a 2006 400SS with merc 600's that pulled 62mph..SWEET!

I have a 2000 400 with 502's and I agree that you have to keep an eye on oil levels (mine burns a little over a quart every 20 hours or so)

I'd love a see a set of 600's running 62 in a 400. I wonder what are the biggest engines/drives anyone has ever put into a 400?

Fly out here to California and i will take you for a ride in my 06 400 SS with 525's and if that doesn't help you decide nothing will.

It's a fun boat that is great for hanging out on, having a party, and can still do 60 MPH

If it's to hot out turn on the air, cold put up the canvas and turn on the Heat.
just a great all around boat.

It's only downfall that i have seen is that it is a pain to tow, but even that can be overcome.
