Default Merc 496 heat exchanger maintenance

I recently removed my heat exchangers to replace thermostats. While they were off I opened them up and cleaned them, blowing out all the tubes, and replaced the seals and gaskets. I saw in the service manual that merc recommends this every 2 years. I know its not done much because none of the local dealers stock the o rings for the end bolts on the exchangers. Even BAM had to order them. The gaskets for the end plates were leaking internally.
