502 Vs 525
Ok, so the dream motor, for my current boat would be a 525 efi, well unlike some people, I cant afford to just go buy a 525. So my little 502 will have to work. I have a 88 240 sport, same as the outlaw, baja. It has some little things done to the boat hull itself. Its no longer has any wood in the boat, but the transom. The rest of the boat is foam core stuff. I have the x demsion raised 3 inches. I currently have a 502, that started life as a efi, but now has a dart highrise with a holley 850 dp on it. I have a slightly larger cam, and the motor has been retor fitted with a roller. And a set of emi thunder manifolds. The boat runs right now, right at 70 spinning a 26 bravo at 4900 rpm. I was wondering, what can I do to this 502 that can get it close to a 525? Does the 525 start with a 454 block or a 502? Whats the cam specs, I know the 525 is a efi, but Im goin to stick with a carb. I would love to run close to 80. Not sure if that is even possible with only a 500 horse motor. Any help..I thank you..

The Merc 525 is actually a 502cid, 525hp motor. The biggest difference between the 500hp and the 525 is the aluminum heads, cam and Fuel injection. Basically you are not far off from what the 525 is. In fact, with the right heads and cam, you will be ahead of the ballgame.

my 88 baja did 83.2gps while testing with about 80 gals, I had a 502 at different stages from 390hp merc to 670hp. you want to run a 1050 carb, isky cam good headers dry to the end of the tails after market heads I had merlin 310s my drive height was raised with a 2'' imco shortie. cams other than isky was that works was the old crane 741.hyd roller, you can read and see picks on the baja forum here on oso I have threads called picks of my boat 1 and 2 I think been at a friends watching the pats loose so its all foggy to me right now, but there should be info on my boat it flew until parts were stolen while I had a few surgeries, my boat would have gone faster with a 28 or 30 bbladdes prop for sure. right now its in storage while I am building a new a new motor and boat if I can answer any Qs call me at 617 833 3327 I have had this boat from 90 to now with 3 different motors from 454 330hp until now with a 509 670hp motor who knows my 572 blower motor might drop in it for a test with 1114hp on 93 oct gas later art
