The sound of a rebuild knocking on your door.

But seriously, knocking is never good. Probably bearings going out.

Consistent or intermittent knock????
At all rpms or at idle/low rpms????

Internal exhaust flappers will sound just like an engine knock at idle/low rpm.

Cut open the oil filter and see if there is metal inside.
You probably spun a bearing.

Put your hand on the exhaust hose near the transom and see if you feel the knock there. If you do, its probably just the internal flappers. Once when I installed a set of Corsa tips, I about chit because of the sound they make.

If its not the internal flappers, then its probably a rod bearing or wrist pin.
