Whats the reason for a remote oil filter???

Not only easier to get to, less spillage in the bilge - block mounted filters (which are mounted at an angle) loose a lot of oil when you remove them.
Since the oil cooler requires plumbing anyway, it's easy to put the filter in a remote location.

To route an oil cooler, you would have to use a sandwich adapter. But if you have room for the adapter and filter no reason it couldn't be used, just inconvientent.
However, IME with cars, you will get a fair amount of oil leakage from the block when you remove the oil filter from the stock location. I don't experience that with the remote filter, so for me that is an advantage.

It can. I got rid of all the remote filter plumbing on my old scarab when my motor blew and the engine builder told me i had the plumbing backwards I knew i didnt but he was the "expert" so it shook my confidence and i took it all off. Never had a problem running them on th eblock....just a PITA to change is all.

With a remote filter location you can run a larger filter. I'm using an Amsoil EAO76 synthetic media, the best filter I've been able to find, it holds almost 2 qts.
