Cool Help on raw water pump pulley

Any help would be wonderful,, have 496 raw water pump ,trying to get pulley off , took to marine mech- he got pulley off half way,but said he broke his puller doing so,( some old threads say to use power steering pump puller ) does this sound correct?,&does the pulley have to be pressed on a certain depth on shaft to have serp.belt line up? Or safe to say ,get as close to the way it was on old pump? Thanks to all

I use a power steering pump puller, and yes it needs to be pressed back on where it was or belt will not line up.

Power steering puller is the only way to get it off AND back on without damaging something. No way around it and not all that expensive. Can't see how it would the break the puller unless he used something other then the a power steering pump puller kit.

Thanks (exp.date) for info ,went to auto mech shop ,pressed pulley off & back on ( all in about 10 min -for cold soda&pack of smokes,no problem, need to install now! Live in Annapolis ,md. Out on chesapeake bay, thanks to all the info,( just wondering ,motor says 400 hrs on it ,ran fine on test drive, giving tune up,changing impeller on raw water pump, led me to finding that the bronze housing was badly grooved on both ends of impeller seat,so now new pump,- question is should I flush( back flush) motor to see if sand/ debris is in system, something caused scorching on pump,or old age ? Old impeller looked fine other than worn & not flexible, must have been changed at some point,,,,,,,,maybe chasing ghost? Or take risk on breaking stuff to get to areas that just might be ok anyhow, Anyway ,thanks again ,maybe I really can use the damn boat know,2001 sonic 496- bravo 1 , redone every thing on boat looks like new, picked up at repo for 8 grand, new 4 grand trailer, can't wait!!!!!!!!!

Here is what I would do its going to cost you nothing other than some time to flush it.Also make sure you flush the heat exchangers and the oil coolers. It can't do any harm so why not do it.It would also inspect the water pickup at the transom assembly, its were the hose connects in the Center of the transom assembly on the top its one bolt 11mm?? I think. Its a rubber gasket that you can usually reuse. The are notorious for clogging on a salt boat especially trailer and lift keep boat as air can get in there when they are sitting.Do that and let us know how you made out.

Expensive date, thanks for advice ,so easy as ,maybe run garden hose to raw water pump hoses & send water thru opposite direction? Maybe water would just run out of lower unit from pump( bravo ) water pickup in lower unit,no transom / thru hull water pick up,or r u saying take hoses off all heat exchangers ,run water thru? (ie: oil- engine - anti freeze -coolers)?? Thanks again,
