Default Team amsoil offshore places 2nd at the port huron, mi international powerboat race

Only two weeks after their convincing victory in Saint Clair, Team AMSOIL took to the waters of the Saint Clair River again to race in the 2nd Annual International Offshore Powerboat Race, co-hosted by Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia, Ontario, Canada. With the championship points race on the line, Team AMSOIL found themselves in a must win situation.

After an impressive inaugural event in 2011, Port Huron and Sarnia once again created a first-rate venue for the race. Fans were able to walk through the public dry pits and see the teams preparing and craning in up close and personal.

On Saturday, Bob, and John Teague were determined to have a productive testing session to find the best setup and lines on the course.

In spite of the rolling thunderstorms and periodic heavy rain, they were able to run multiple setups for over a total of 150 miles.

On Saturday evening, the race teams crossed the river to Sarnia, Canada on their race boats to participate in a meet and greet and autograph session.

Luckily, the weather held out and once again the Canadian fans showcased their enthusiasm.

Team AMSOIL would like to thank the city of Sarnia for their support of this event, and look forward to visiting again next year.

On Sunday, Team AMSOIL raced in the final event in the late afternoon. Conditions of a slight crosswind and generally calm water held throughout the day. Starting from the outside lane, Bob and John knew they would be challenged on a very tricky right-hand course that featured a left hand dogleg and obstacles exiting the upriver turn.

When the green flag dropped, the AMSOIL 368 Skater pulled the hole shot by a few boat lengths and was established in the lead entering the first turn. Pre-race, the drivers were instructed to hold their lane through turn one due to the proximity to the Sarnia seawall and channel markers on turn exit. Accordingly, Bob and John left a lane open to the inside, allowing PhoenixParts.com to exit the turn deck to deck with Team AMSOIL. A few laps of intense deck to deck racing followed.

Then, at the down river turn, Team AMSOIL crossed into the inside lane in an attempt to get the inside line. Following the outside to inside maneuver, Team AMSOIL was caught in their competitor’s rooster-tail and was blinded as PheonixParts.com pulled to the inside. Water was ingested by Team AMSOIL which caused the engines to miss for about one lap. This allowed PhoenixParts.com to pull away by multiple boat-lengths. Team AMSOIL was unable to make up the gap and finished the race in second place.

Team AMSOIL congratulates Ray Contreras and Anthony Smith of Team PhoenixParts.com on running a fine race.

We are proud to announce that AMSOIL is the returning sponsor for the 2012 AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series sanctioned by OPA Racing.
