Default Mazda RX8

Does anyone in this community have experience with them?

I like the versatility of it being a sports car, with more than a normal sports car's access to the backseat. I rarely have backseat passengers, and when I do it's for no more than 40 miles when carpooling for HOV lanes.

How do they ride on the highway?
Do they handle well (fun) on back-road curves?
What goes bad on them?
How long many miles can I expect out of a stock drivetrain?
At what odometer mileage would you be scared to buy one?
What is the real world fuel mileage?
Can one perform DIY maintenance on them?

Thanks in advance for any & all information.

Sry I'm not able to answer all of your questions but my best friend had one (six speed with the higher output). They are an incredibly balanced car (one of the best stock handling cars I have driven). I know magazines hailed their handling capabilities so yes it will be a fun back roads car. The downfalls are the lack of low end torque (redlines at 8500 if I remember right), ****ty fuel mileage (rated 17/24 mpg), and rotary motors love to burn oil (my buddy added oil every four fill-ups). However, those rotaries can take a beating. All in all a great car. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Early in my track weekends I ran with one often. Like stated, no low end torque but would handle the turns great and moved pretty well if he kept the rpms up.........but that's all I can add.

I have had a couple of rotary engine cars. Used to build and race them too.

Was excited when RX8 came out. A new modern day rotary, so I bought one. Bad move - lousy mileage and it had to be towed numerous times.
Motor died several time w/o warning.
All kinds of misc minor motor problems.
They kept putting in spark plugs - prob went thru 5 - 6 plug changes in less than 20K miles. It was fun to drive when it ran right.
I knew I was in trouble the 1st time it was towed and the tow truck driver said he tows these all the time. Even told me what the dealership was going to tell me what the problem was (he was right).

I would pass.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The lack of pickup and grunt is a showstopper for me. I'm not even going to bother test driving one. I like doing my own maintenance, but I sure as hell don't want to add oil once a week.

A friend and coworker of mine (whom has since passed away) built a 1993 RX7 with an LS6 in it; which since learning of this build, has had my interest in these type of cars. I guess I am going to have to wait for my own swap one day.

I think it sold. I was interested if the price was right, but it got above what I was willing to pay for it....

Plus it was in California.

It was one of those conversions where a lot of the stuff hadn't been done correctly (ie none of the guages worked, AC didn't work, etc...)
