Default how to determine indicator cable lengths?

i am sitting here making a list of things that i need to do to my boat this year and ordering parts. i need to order cables for the k plane mechanical indicator and was wondering if anyone had a good method for measuring these? do you just measure as best as you can and hope for the best?

Within about a foot of the end of the cable you will find a number like 240 this is the length in inches of the cable.

Measure best you can and add about 2-3 feet. Better to have too much as opposed to too little, the excess will form bends in the gunwales or behind the dash.
