Default Water pressure..pick up location?

I am installing a water pressure gauge on my new motor, need advice on pick up location.
My new setup is a 502 with a closed cooling system. I want to monitor water pressure from my sea pump to my closed cooling heat exchanger to make sure I have sufficient flow. With my recent gauge purchase I also got the tubing kit and a 1 1/4 s.s. splice fitting with a female 1/2npt fitting so I could adapt down to the pressure gauge tube fitting.
My plan was to splice into one of the hoses before the raw water entered the heat exchanger. Would I be better off splicing in before or after the oil cooler?
Or is there a better way to do this all together?

Thanks
Derek.

The engines I put in my Kackina have the pressure dumps just off of the sea pump before the oil cooler. Randy

What should the psi be after the sea pump? Where it's not going through the motor is it necessary to bleed off excess pressure?

I'm thinking 18-20psi @ wot. I have read that too much pressure can cause gasket problems. I am pretty sure that is where Bob @ Bullet engines told me to set it. At idle the pressure will be low like 0-3psi. Randy

I put mine in the intake manifold per my engine builders recomondation. There are many opinions on where to locate the pressure relief valve.

the op asked where to take his pressure reading from, and i don,t think it matters if before or after the oil cooler, the pressure will be the same.on a closed cooling system you do not want to dump any water from the closed side.

Thanks guys.
It looks like my post was a little misunderstood.
Mike T, has it though.
Not looking to dump water.....looking to find a pick up location (closed cooling.)

I'm sorry, I saw the 1 1/4 splice fitting & went with it. If you have a 496 I would mount it as close to the exchanger inlet fitting as possible. The reason for this is because I had a problem with one of mine running hot & I finally backflushed it from that point to clean the coolers. If I had a gauge to monitor I might have caught it sooner with less head scratching. Nice catch Mike I was beginning to act like I knew something for a minute. Randy

Randy, sorry for the confusion. Your proposed location of the pick up makes perfect sense.
Thanks
Derek.
