Does My Oil Filter On My 496 HO Mags Have An Anti-Drain Back Valve?
I'm having way too many problems getting the correct oil filter and being comfortable that I have the correct one.
I just purchased this 2005 Sunsation Dominator with twin 496 HO Mags
I went to Mercury's website and punched in my serial numbers and the filter there says it's a 35-802885Q. of course this filter does not exist right. my local marina hims and haws and I request that they call Mercury. You'd swear that we were talking to them about something prewar. the filter they want to sell me is a part number 35-866340K01. this filter is like 2/3 the total height of the Purolator PL34631. so he says "That's the problem right there. someone put the wrong one on it". so when I specifically ask him if this one he wants to sell is the correct one he says "It should be". Well that's real comforting. I asked him if it had an anti-drain back valve in it and he didn't know. I had him ask Mercury when he had them on the phone, and they had no idea what I was talking about. I'd really like to put some filters on this thing and dump the Mercruiser oil in that must be extracted from the ground right directly adjacent to a gold mine. Can you please help?

I just installed a k&n filter hp-3002 on my 496ho. It's a quality filter with anti drain valve that can be bought almost anywhere.

Merc uses the same oil filters on nearly all of their V8 sterndrive engines. Yours take the standard Merc oil filter.
If I look up my engine(2000 502mpi) it shows the same old part number that you posted.
I run Mobil1 M1-302 Filters and they do have an anti drainback valve. A very good filter and readily available at most auto parts stores.

I run Wix 51086 (NAPA Gold 1086). Has the anti-drainback valve.
