Default Temp gauge pegged backwards when ignition on.. 496 Mag Faria gauges

Hey, trying to troubleshoot a temp gauge issue. As soon as the ignition is turned on, the gauge pegs backwards, or as low as possible. Key off, the gauge returns to near the 'cold position' as normal. Once in a while underway the gauge jumps up to the normal reading (at least im not overheating) but then pegs backwards again. I have tried cleaning contacts on gauge, and tried the connector where I 'think' the engine temp sender is on the block. Also checked the barrel connector for corrosion, nothing. It is a 496 mag/ bravo 3 combo. Faria or some gauge just like that. I have searched and it seems like people have issues with them pegging to the max, but not much for reverse. Is it not grounding at the sender itself in the block, or a bad sender wire.. or bad sensor itself (this didnt make sense as it does read once in a blue moon for a second so seems like a wiring/ground issue). Any help is appreciated!

Normally gauge issues are with ground wiring. Might check the sending unit to see if it sending a signal.

If they are Faria gauges they work like VDO gauges, backwards from what you would think. Faria gauges ohms increase as the temp rises and get less when they are cooler. With you pegging to below cold you have something going wrong with the gauge. If they are another brand let us know and we can look into it.

I think it is actually a Teleflex.. its on a Searay if that helps any. How does the sender 'ground'? Is it not just one wire coming from the temp sender and it grounds through the threads where its mounted?

Sorry it took so long to get back, went out of town. Looks like Teleflex uses about the same settings.
■Termperature: 240 Ohms at 120F and 33 Ohms at 240F
