No because the 496 is a distributorless engine that has crank and cam gear reluctors inwhich is read by those 2 sensor for proper inputs to the PCM for proper timing and rpms, MEFI 3 can not decipher the correct outputs to properly maintain those signals. That's the main issue among others in the mix.

I think if you want to further your set up persay with something like a full MSD crank trigger set up & correct wiring harnesses then possible you could get MEFI 3 to work correctly. You will need the MEFI 3 remapped plus you will be losing water pressure signal among other PCM signals and fault codes that PCM 555 is set up for. I know MEFI 4 thru 6 would work for sure. Volvo Penta used MEFI 4 up to 2004 then went over to E Controls ECM / PCM for the 496 and other MPI engines in their line up.. You are better off trying to use MEFI 4 or but IMO better yet with 5 & 6.

Also MEFI 3 is NLA from all the marine OEM manufacturers as they are selling the MEFI 4 conversion kit to work correctly but it is expensive.
