Another fun build that worked out real well. Mike Tkach built this one for a friend. It started out as a 502 Mag engine. Stripped down, bored to 509ci, flat top pistons installed, 2.3L carb'd whipple, with intercooler. . The owner of the engine wanted to stick with the GM rectangle ports. They did need some work, some seats were no good, etc. Anyhow, the shop went thru the heads, installed the larger 2.25 intakes, and did their valve job and bowl/pocket port cleanup. Bob M spec'd the cam for this build.
Mike and I went back and forth on this build, debating on what we thought it would make for power. Granted, him and I have never used one of these small single carb whipples before, and lets just say we underestimated it. Mike and I honestly thought this engine would maybe do around 650HP range. We were way off.
What really impressed me was the torque with this baby screw! Good lord. Anyhow, just thought I'd share it. Pretty basic build, nothing real trick. Bob nailed it on the cam as usual, and it just worked nicely.

That 850 must have been struggling airflow wise.
