Default What gasket surface cleaner?

What do you all use for final wipe down of the gasket surfaces before putting things together?

We use brake cleaner as it leaves no residue. That's why it is made for brake rotors and other brake parts. We also use lint free rags.

I use lacquer thinner also but for some reason a motor I built last spring still had wet RTV in it. Not liquid but oooozy. Looking for answers to a lot of questions with this one.

I've bought Rtv that must have been sitting on the shelf for awhile and it never cured. It does go bad. I probably have a couple tubes in my toolbox right now that will not cure. I usually do a test squirt on something and see if it sets up b4 I use it on a motor. As far as surface prep usually brake clean or whatever else I have laying around. Starting fluid works very well to.

I use carb cleaner to get rid of the heavier deposits because it seems to break down the oils and whatever else that's leftover. I use brake cleaner before final.

RTV will only care about the surface's prep with regard to adhesion. If the vulcanizing agents are intact, it will still harden. Sounds line just a bad batch of RTV... previously frozen or just expired.
