Default chicken or the egg, ECm or guage

Talking about electrical gremlins on boats this weekend prompted a question. Do pre Smartcraft ( mefi 3s and 4s) engine mounted sensors (oil pressure, voltage, type) send to dash gauges first and gauges to ecm, or vice versa? In other words, if your dash shows low oil pressure, and the ecm records the code, did the ecm tell the guage, or did the guage tell the ecm

I haven't looked at the diagram just yet, but if memory serves me correctly items like coolant temp and oil pressure are sent from their respective sensors to the ECM. There is a separate sensor that sends those parameters to the dash as well.
