Harness

Harness
Just curious where I would begin to look for the harness from the engine to the helm. Buddy has a 1990 25 baja with a single. He has mentioned wanting to replace it. Is that a harness that can be bought or should it just be rewired? What's your opinions? Also I'm not sure why he wants to replace it we were just talking about it.
Thanks for any help.

I just rewired my complete boat. It is repairable unless the plug itself has burned contacts. Is there a boat junkyard or a marina that has some old boats sitting on there back lot? They may be willing to sell him what he needs.

I am assuming that is the old style with the rubber plug? Mercury sells it 2 ways, one is nicely terminated at the helm end with all the connections labeled. Can be a bit messy under the dash as the lengths are not exactly what you need unless of course you cut the ends off and put your own connectors on. And is "bare" meaning there is no jacket around the individual wires. Just a long group of wires, comes 3, 20 and 25 feet 812475Ax (x = length)
It does make life easier as there is a power, sender and ground lead for each gauge.
The other way is called intrument extension harness. It has a nice jacket around the wires, a male plug on one end and a female on the other. But you have to cut it to length and do your own connections. 10,15,20,30 and 45 feet. 812441AXX
