Default 86 Panther with Alpha drives?

Looking at a boat that is a '86 Wellcraft Panther that has twin 454with alpha1 drives. The carb covers say 454 alpha mags. I did not think alphas were paired with big blocks.

I think there were a few done about that time, it was just before the introduction of Bravos. Sea Ray set them up on their Pachanga 32's and they're a pretty heavy boat. Most people will say too much power and weight for Alphas, just depends on how you treat them and if you're planning to increase the power.

I think the Alphas are good for about 300hp. Wouldn't even recommending tuning up a BBC 330hp in front of one!!! LOL!

I had a 20' Executive "sleeper" that had a blown SBC in front of an Alpha. Lasted several years, then pulling a skier it blew the lower gears, next year pulling a skier it blew the upper box, next summer it had a new owner!
