Hi!

I have just bought an XE256 camshaft with the following specs.

212" / 218" @ 0.050" duration
0,447" / 0,454" lift
Lobe separation: 110 degrees
Intake centerline: 106 degrees

I have a Federal Mogul timing chain set that come with a lower sprocket that has three different keyway positions (+4, 0, -4).

I want to install the cam @ 110 intake centerline, should I use the -4 position??

Opps, I didn't read your post correctly. So, the answer I posted below doesn't help. Sorry about that.

No, to place it straight up (intake centerline on 106*), you would use the 0* key.

This cam already has 4* of advance/retard ground into it (I never can remember which one it is). You can tell this by sutracting the IC centerline from the Lobe seperation angle: 110-106=4*.

I have the xe256-112, and its IC centerline is 108* So, 112-108=4*

If you used the wrong 4* slot (again, can't remember which one) you would have 8* total, and your engine wouldn't run well and may be more prone to sucking water.

The rule on advance/retard for ICLs is , IMHO, a$$backwards. IOW, going to a higher number of degrees is "retarding" the cam and going to lower degrees is "advancing." (Had to go back to my files to get this bit of trivia).

So, you need to "retard" the cam 4* to move the IC centerline from 106* to 110*. This will give the cam an overall advance/retard of 0* (110 LSA - 110 ICL=0*), but you already knew that.

The question is, is the +4 slot equal to 4* of retard. I would bet so, but don't know for sure.

Why not call Federal Mogul and ask them? Also, I'd double check by degreeing the camshaft. If you have a degreed balancer, you can use that to make sure the IC is at about 110*
