K-planes not working
My K-planes don't want to move up or down. The motor turns and the fluid is up to the fill plug. Can anyone explain the mechanics of them to me? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Just bought the boat Saturday. I emailed the previous owner and am awaiting his reply. I took the fill plug out and tried to trim it up and down. It did not move. Also, it didn't look like there was any movement in the fluid. BTW the fluid is a kind of pink color, sort of like pepto.

If it is pink then you have water in it. It should be red (ATF) or Motor Oil. I did one a while back that was doing this and found that it was a rebuilt one and the guy never put a insert that goes btwn the motor and the pump. There is not a whole lot to fix or break in them so that is were I would look first. Did you try and hit and hold the button for a little bit? while you have a friend hold the trim button give the thing a couple wacks with a hammer (not hard). There is a little ball valve in there that could I sappose get stuck. Hope that helps ya some.

Both sides don't work? You should have seperate pumps for each k-plane. I doubt both pumps would be bad at the same time. Do the pumps run when you hit the switch? If not, you must have an electrical problem. check for voltage and grounds to the pumps first.

Both pumps run when I press their switch. Voltage looked like it was +6V or -6V depentding on whether I was trimming up or down. I think I will change the fluid and give it a whack with a rubber mallet while trying to trim it.

Just got an email from the previous owner... He had the motors replaced, so I am assuming the place that did it did not reassemble them correctly. If I disassemble them what should I look for?

I don't know if this will help, but they are 1992 models. Most of the newer ones I've seen, the pump is in the engine compartment and the ram is out on the transom. On mine, it is all one piece (the motor, pump and ram). The only thing that comes out of the back of the transom is the rod attached to the plane.
