What would you do to a 496 motor to set up as a spare boat motor. The motor came out of a truck the broke a valve and was replaced under warranty. There is no other damage.
What has to be done to make this motor good for a boat with a minimal amount of investment.

741 cam ,make heads with screw in studs to adjust valves ,good springs ,,cheap fix ,,,,great motor

(496 c.i.) out of a late model truck ?

What do you think about bearings?
What do you do for an intake and ignition system?
There is no distributor on the current set up. Thanks for the help!

this is the basic starting point
for the 496 mag merc.
I don't know if there's
any aftermarket type
parts ( intake, dist,)
for these yet.
You could use merc
accessories (for a 496)
but that may not be cheap.

I thought marine engines ran a wider top compression ring gap and looser piston/cylinder clearances than automotive engines. I have heard of problems with broken ring lands on pistons on engines that have these tolerances too close. You might want to do some research on this to prevent a nasty surprise.

Tantrum and I are going to be working on this project together. we hope to build a spare motor. we both know one of us will need it someday.... That's as long as Chris has a single engine boat.

so here is the deal...... the engine has 10k miles on it. It blew a lifter but everything is fine. The motor is in excellent shape.

What I would like to do is change the main bearings to cleveite 77 H bearings , new rings, valves, springs, cam, mill and port the heads. .

The heads have very long , but narrow intake ports and very small exhaust ports the will have to be ported.

All that work I can handle but here is the dilemma. What to use for an intake and ignition.

I have the factory intake with out any of the plumbing on it but that's it. If you look in the lifter valley You can see that there is a hole for a distributor to go threw. I would much rather use a carburetor and a distributor set up if possible....

un fortunately we cant start this project till we find out what to do for the intake and ignition problem.

The auto engine has the exact same pistons and rods, the change is the camshaft and crank (for the HO version). Heads, valves, pistons, rods, bearings, manifold, rings, etc. are all the same.
