Default 500EFI runs then stops - Update FIXED

2000 HP500EFI
Runs for a bit then dies.. ... wait a few and starts for a few seconds and dies again. This just happened today . Ran just long enough to get it off the trailer and then died while docking.... Grrrrrr.... missed the poker run and the only nice boating day we've had for a month!

I replaced the water seperator but did not prime it.... .. does it HAVE to be primed? After that it started up and ran for a minute then died... checked the seperator for fuel and it was dry ...

I can hear the fuel pump buzz when I turn the key on ... I did this many times to try and prime the system ... finally got it to start again but it died ... this time the seperator was about 1/2 to 3/4 full of fuel..

So... think this is still a priming problem or is it a fuel pump issue?

Also.. should I change the filter just before the fuel rail on the back of the engine?

I am suspect of water in the fuel because I left the cover off and the boat took on some water during last weeks storms ...

UPDATE!!!
ECM went bad.... Mercury Racing stepped up to the plate and replaced it NO CHARGE even though the boat is a couple years out of warranty.

Change the filter and put some dry gas in it. Check the PSI, I am not sure the exact # but 50 psi should be a good start.

OK..i;m not saying this is the problem but it happend to my buddy's new 38'er.

Check the pickup tube from the gas tank......his had a crack in it and once the fuel got below 1/2 tank it would suck air and start stalling the engine. It woudl not go above 2500rpm
took 3 "master mechanics" and a trip to Merc high perf to figure it out!!

Yea when it happen to us it was almost comical! My buddy keeps the boat on a hydrohoist. So when the tech came out to look at it all they did was lower the back end of the boat enough to get water to the drives for cooling......the gas all moved to the rear of the tank and covered the crack thus no symptoms! then they say its fixed......get out on the water and it happens again! back and forth 3 times.....everytime they change something else....fuel injectors.....electric fuel pump......press. regulator.....Finally my buddy got fed up with them (after the mechanic left a gas soaked rag on the back seat and stained it!!! ) and took it straight to merc....they had it done in one try!

Thanks for the replies...

Got a full tank of gas so I don't think that's the problem.

I'm gonna prime the filter this time and check the pressure.

Yeah Troutly.. while searching for an answer here I came across a couple threads where you talked about that issue...

I've never had any problems with vapor locking .... even in the middle of summer at Havasu (117 degrees) .. ran it hard without a hitch...

My boat has been turn-key, dead reliable until this season ... first day out it ate the impeller. Now I have this issue... but I am pretty sure it's related to water in the fuel.

I had the boat in my driveway pointing just a little downhill without the cockpit cover on when we got like 4 inches of rain .... I noticed the water in the bilge was up to the level of the cokpit floor and over the fuel filler hose connection... I am assuming the water got into fuel through there somehow.

Of course ... it could just be a coincidence and the fuel pump could be the problem ...

I couldn't get to it today but I will be working on it tomorrow... I'll keep y'all posted.

Kevin,

I am pretty sure you just need to pull the new filter and fill it with fuel. I did the same thing and like to never got one of my engines started. Otherwise you have to turn the key on and off about fifty times to finally get enough fuel cycled through to get it running.

Sorry to hear this, we missed you yesterday, but the poker run was a real cluster F***.
