sticking silent choice
I have merc silent choice. When I run exhaust thru the
transom it wont switch back to the prop. When I bought
the boat last year it didnt work. I pulled the air cylinders
off and found It was very hard to move the levers, so
over the winter I install new new bushings, seals & plates
in the divertors. They move nice & easy now, I figured I
nailed it. Now if it running thru props it will easily pull
the plates to thru hull but when I switch it back I have
the take a screwdriver and push on the lever, then it snaps
back. You can hear the air release fully. Ive tried some air
tool oil in the cylinders & tried adjusting them but still sticks.
Any ideas.
Thanks, Rick

Mine used to do the same thing. Both air was released from the lines and the levers moved freely by hand. What I found was that the cyl. end and the slot in the lever would bind at times just enough to keep them from switching. Just a simple flip by hand would switch it. I loosened the 2 cyl mounting bolts and then moved it around enough in the hole slots until the binding quit, then retightened the screws. It doesn't take much sticking to keep them from working correctly, as it is just spring return. And just a dab grease on the linkage does wonders too.

Update, worked on my silent choice this weekend, tried all the
suggestions. They still do the same thing. I unhooked the
cylinders, the levers move free. I think the cylinders are
junk. Must have some corrosion inside. Does anybody know
if they come apart ? Does anybody have a working set they
want to sell reasonable? Im pissed I spent all the money
on the fixing the diverters. By the time I get done I could have just bought a new set of electric ones.

I keep having the opposite problem. I'll be riding down the river and the diverter will close. I have had it back to the dealer several times and he says it is the check valve. He replaced the valve but the problem keeps resurfacing?
