A small block weighs about 500-550 lbs. I think on the lower side with an aluminum intake. Big blocks are about 600-650. This is with no exhaust or transmission on either. I would use a 1000 lbs minimum rated hoist , unless I did not care about what it landed on.

I used to work in a place with a pallet sized scale (certified) to weigh product before shipment. I installed a small block motor there, and out of curiosity, I set it on the scale. Motor was 100% stock & complete as Mercruiser ships them. Weight was 880 lbs. Aluminum intake and exhaust should reduce some.

David- was that with mounts, etc.? I think the weights I posted was for a basic complete engine with no accessories. I put a 302 Chevy in a 280Z a few years back and weighed each piece seperately. That was with no exhaust manifolds, etc. which I would imagine add few pounds. I think a big block was 120 lbs heavier, and aluminum heads subtracted 70 lbs from that. I still wish I would have stuffed my L-88 427 engine in the Z car- but I might not be here today, either!
It sounds like 1000 LBs is a safe number in any case.
Jon- Good Luck!

Weight was 100% complete engine, ready to run, with exhaust manifolds, risers, starter, alt, flywheel, water pump, ps pump, hoses, belts, mounts, wire harness, etc. When I installed it, all I had to do was connect rubber exhaust hoses to risers, water hose from gimbal to thermo housing, plug electrical harness from boat in, hook up cables & fuel line, and of course, alignment. I also concur that a 1000# lift minimum is ok.
